Random number:

In TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions), the Random Number is a unique 10-digit number assigned to each applicant. It is used only for tie-breaking purposes when multiple candidates have the same cutoff marks.

Why is it used?

When two or more candidates have exactly the same cutoff mark, the following criteria are used in order:

  1. Higher Mathematics marks
  2. Higher Physics marks
  3. Higher Chemistry marks
  4. Date of birth - older candidates are given priority
  5. Random number - used as the final tie-breaker if all above are still equal

How is it generated?

  1. It is a computer-generated 10-digit number
  2. Typically generated using a random function or algorithm
  3. It has no relation to your marks, rank, or application ID

Example:

Two students have:

  1. Same cutoff (say 198.67)
  2. Same marks in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry
  3. Same date of birth

In that case, the random number will be compared — the higher random number gets the priority.
